Dr. Tyron R. Crimi-hanshi 10 Dan USA
Dr. Tyron R. Crimi-hanshi 10 Dan USA

For 46 years, Grandmaster Dr. Crimi-hanshi has been passionately immersed in martial arts. His path began in 1959 in Nevada, when he began training in judo for the following four years. In 1963, he moved to Grass Valley, CA, and in the city of Sacramento he found a new dojo teaching karate. In 1969, he received a shodan, first dan, in kempo karate. For the following two years (1970-1972), Dr. Crimi studied a multitude of martial arts, including hwarang do, tang soo do, hapkido and aikido, yet his quest was still unfulfilled.

Then in 1972, his interest was peaked by an article about jujutsu. So he attended a seminar being taught in Nevada by Professor Francis Merlin 'Bud' Estes (who was a student of the late founder of kodenkan dan zan-ryu jujutsu, Seishiro 'Henry' Okazaki). In Professor Estes, Dr. Crimi found his true master.

With permission from Professor Estes, Dr. Crimi opened his own dojo in Grass Valley, CA., and founded hikari ryuza ryu do kanŽ, and hikari ryuza ryu jujutsuŽ. Dr. Crimi was Professor Estes' student from 1972, and his private student for the last four years of Professor Estes' life, travelling at least twice a week from Grass Valley to Chico, CA, until Professor Estes' death in 1981. One year prior to his teacher's passing, while receiving his sandan, third dan, he was imparted these words: "Welcome aboard. How does it feel to be a servant to mankind for the rest of your life?"

Dr. Crimi has been teaching martial arts for the past 36 years, 28 of which have been spent teaching hikari ryuza ryu jujutsuŽ. Since the opening of his dojo, Dr. Crimi has been responsible for 33 students attaining the rank of black belt (shodan, first dan, and higher). He has been a defensive tactics instructor for law enforcement for over 28 years, his course for which is certified through the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), California Department of Justice. His curriculum includes special courses of tactical training, such as ATGrD (Advanced Tactical Ground Defense), PCT (Pain Compliance Techniques), and ha-e-ha (blade to blade). On 4 February 2005 Dr. Crimi received the Meritorious Service Medal for Law Enforcement for 28 years of service to law enforcement and the community; the Meritorious Service Medal is the highest award for law enforcement that can be bestowed upon an individual.

Dr. Crimi currently holds the ranks of judan, tenth dan, in hikari ryuza ryu jujutsuŽ through the ATAMA and the EJJU, and the rank of kyudan, ninth dan, and the shogo (title) of shihan in dan zan-ryu and goshin-ryu jujutsu, again through the EJJU. Dr. Crimi also holds a Ph.D. in Medical Science, an OMD Doctor of Oriental Medicine and is board certified through the United States Integrative Medical Association, the American Alternative Medical Association, the American Naturopathic Medical Association and the International Alternative Medical Association.

Professionally, Dr. Crimi is President of the ATAMA, and is also honoured to be the United States representative for the EJJU, IJJF and the All Budo Federation Seibukan Academy, Kyoto, Japan. Dr. Crimi is also a proud member of Hanshi no Iinkai.
