Shelley-kyoshi is the Chief Instructor of Kuro Hayashi Kai, based in the heart of the Essex countryside and in Sussex, England. Shelley-kyoshi is currently nanadan, seventh dan, and is one of only two masters of shindo-ryu karatedo, other than the founder, to have achieved this rank. In October 2004, Shelley-kyoshi was awarded the shogo (title) of kyoshi and was soon after presented with the certificate during his tour of Japanese JKF dojo demonstrating shindo-ryu. Shelley-kyoshi is also a respected board member of Zen Eikoku Shindo-Ryu Karate-Do Renmei and Sekai Shindo-Ryu Karate-Do Renmei and a shibucho (branch director) for Kodo Butoku Renmei.
